31 DAYS OF POETRY- DAY 28- TO A FUTURE THAT WAS KILLED BY ITS PAST- by Servio Gbadamosi

In Lagos, Port-Harcourt, Onitsha,
The future is given to the past in colourful
Ceremonies of waste - of winds warm with the wine
Of wickedness as the precious womb and its young are
Raped and slaughtered for sport by the marauding beasts

Flatulent priests of the South anoint the
Walking-dead for breakthroughs, cars, houses,
For flightless jets. The priests of the North are lean
From the ritual of houses that cannot be lived in, vehicles
That cannot be driven, fields that cannot be harvested and
Corpses that the earth’s bloodied womb can no longer hold

Have the gods you so love to serve
Forsaken you? When will the West, the East
Deliver the impotent help promised? Oh foolish Nigerians!
War has crept into your cities, invaded your father’s compound
Planted its barrel in your mother’s womb; war has eaten the heart
Of your children. And you are here - seated, eating, drinking, talking…
